What Is the Origin of Mardi Gras Masks & Costumes?
By:Kim Kenney

New Orleans has been celebrating Mardi Gras since the 18th century. The Krewe of Comus, a secret society or private social club, put on the first Mardi Gras parade in 1857. Masks and costumes have been an integral part of the festivities since the beginning.

Mardi Gras History
Modern Mardi Gras traditions originated in New Orleans but have roots in Medieval European celebrations. The first written reference to a Mardi Gras Carnival in New Orleans appeared in 1781.

Masks
As early as the 1830s people in masks participated in Mardi Gras celebrations while parading in horse-drawn carriages.

Tradition
According to retailer Mardi Gras Masks, people hide behind their masks to act out "final moments of fun" before the solemnity of Lent begins.

Costumes
Mardi Gras costumes originated in Medieval Europe when they were worn to mock the nobility.

Official Colors
Purple, green and gold became the official colors of Mardi Gras in 1892. Many costumes and masks are made in these colors.
