Bus Safety Advice to Teach Your Kids
By:Joseph Devine

It is natural, perhaps even instinctive, to care about the well being of the children in our communities. If you know a young child who rides the bus to school, you may want to teach them the following safety tips, to ensure they make it to school and home again as safely as possible.

Wait at the bus stop patiently. Reckless games might cause you to accidently step into the road or otherwise put yourself at risk. Play quietly or just talk with your friends, keeping an eye out for the bus and any traffic in the road that might be a risk.

Behave on the bus. The driver needs to concentrate on the road, traffic laws and other vehicles or pedestrians. He or she cannot focus if the bus is filled with noisy, disobedient children. Be especially quiet around train tracks. The driver needs to look and listen for the train. The harder you make this task for the driver, the more danger you are in.

Remember that the driver cannot see you when you walk near the bus. It is difficult for the driver of a large vehicle to see anything close to the ground very clearly. Children are especially at risk in this situation. Even if you are crossing behind a bus, the driver may need to back up for an unexpected reason, such as a car pulling out of a driveway. To be safe, do not cross the street until the bus has pulled away and the road is clear.

Use caution when getting on or off the bus. Loose clothing such as scarves, long sleeves and backpacks can get caught on exposed screws or other pieces of metal around the stairwell. If your clothing gets snagged, you could trip and fall down the stairs. Take the stairs at a reasonable speed and keep an eye out for anything that might snag you.

Sometimes schools have many buses lined up at the beginning at end of the day. If your school does, be very careful while you are walking through this parking lot. If you walk out from between two buses, a driver coming down the road may not see you in time to stop. If you cross between the busses at the beginning of the line, they might try to pull into the street without noticing you. Walk, don't run, and keep your eyes and ears open in this dangerous situation.
