Importance of Drinking Water - Why Water is Our Friend

Our body is a remarkable work of art, and one of the greatest examples of engineering ever achieved. You will be hard pressed to find a mechanical device which has an equivalent degree of skilled craftsmanship, elegance in its flawless design, and which is able to do so much, on so little.

However, like any other mechanical device our body needs fuel and energy in order to ensure that it is working in optimal condition. The two basic fuel components our body requires are food and water. Although we can make do without food for a full month before succumbing to the ravages of starvation, we can only survive without water for a week before dying.

Whilst the importance of drinking water can be summed up rather succinctly in the somewhat extreme (although entirely accurate) example of survival, water must form part of our regular diet otherwise we will risk a myriad of different health complaints and disorders.

This is hardly surprising, given that water is used in just about every single bodily function, ranging from the circulation of blood around the body, the digestion process, and even the growth of hair and nails. Water is our friend and our fuel, and so we must ensure that we are adequately hydrated.

Most of us do not consume enough water each day; although this is somewhat understandable given that we tend to get "mixed" signals from the brain. Whenever our body requires more water, the brain issues nerve impulses in order to prompt the person to drink more to replenish diminished reserves. However, in many cases the body assumes that this is actually a hunger signal and so we have food cravings instead.

The next time you feel hungry, try this little experiment. Instead of reaching for a snack, have a glass of water instead and then see how full you really are afterward. As can be seen, the importance of drinking water can also be found in healthy eating, and is a useful ally for those who are on a diet.

Water deficiencies are also categorized by migraines, poor concentration and limited attention spans. If you are trying to study then why not have a glass of water at your side, to sip on? Your brain will thank you for it, and you may find that you are able to take more information in.
