10 Tips to Increase Mileage
By:Dave Simpson

The biggest nut to adjust on any automobile is the one behind the wheel! You can tinker with the engine, adjust the suspension, tweak the shocks and fit a whole bunch of carbon fiber to the body but the single most important modification a person can make to his or her vehicle is their driving style. While a modified vehicle will get better MPG regardless of the driver, driving techniques have the added advantage of being free and portable - you can translate your fuel saving skills to any vehicle you drive.

So, if you want to save fuel and increase mileage, then just try some of these simple tips. They're a lot cheaper than modifying your automobile, and with todays astronomical gas prices, you will see an immediate benefit

1) Drive less
Yep, obvious I know, but the best way to reduce fuel use is simply to drive less. Try and carpool, take a train or bus if available, or why not give yourself a good workout and take your bicycle to work. You can save of gas, and a gym membership at the same time.

2) Attend a driving clinic
Hybrid owners groups are appearing up in cities around the world - and non-hybrid drivers are often welcome to attend regular meetings. Fuel efficient driving techniques are commonly discussed, and clinics are sometimes offered by experienced members.

3) Clean out your trunk
The extra weight you carry around in your vehicle doesn't ride along for free. Every pound your carry takes energy to move it around. Removing unnecessary stuff from your vehicle saves fuel.

4) Remove roof racks and add-ons if you don't use them
If your vehicle come with a roof rack and you don't use it, take it off. The same applies for bike racks and other addons. Everything you remove from the outside of your vehicle, including unused cellphone antennae, will reduce aerodynamic drag, resulting in better fuel economy.

5) Ensure Your Tires Are At The Correct Pressure
Make sure that your tire pressures are set to manufacturer specifications. Under pressurised tires increase drag, as well as wearing out quicker. Its worth remembering that pressure is affected by ambient temperature. As temperature drops, so does your tire pressure, so keep track as the seasons change.

6) Plan your journey
Generally speaking, its a good idea to travel roads that have less traffic on them. Freeways often become clogged at rush hour meaning that you will simply be burning gas sitting going nowhere. Better to take a less direct route that allows you to keep moving than a freeway that may have you sitting idling for hours, or driving 'stop-start'.

7) Brake early
Its best not to brake at all, as this is simply wasting kinetic energy. Of course we all need to brake sometimes - well at least once a journey! Dont accelerate hard simply to brake hard 100 yards along the road. Smooth driving will significantly increase your mileage as you don't burn gas accelerating simply to see the energy dissipate as you brake hard

8) Close the sunroof at higher speeds
Some sunroof styles are better than others. The worst offenders are the kind which tilt and slide to the outside, on top of the roof. When open, these "roof-top spoilers" can significantly increase aerodynamic drag, but even the slide types create vortices that contribute to drag.
witching on headlights during the day increases safety.

9) If You Have A Manual Transmission cruise in high gear
When cruising at a constant speed, shift to the highest gear you can use without lugging the engine.

10) Dont Listen To The Radio
Apart from being a (mindless?) distraction it eats power. Its not just the radio however, air con, electric windows, sunroof and even headlights should be used sparingly. Remember, all electrical power is ultimately derived from you gas, so the fewer electrical gadgets you use, the less gas you will burn.
