Fires - Why They Get Started and How to Stop Them
By:Aydan Corkern

In all kinds of fires, it is true what they say. We need air to live, so does fires. When a fire happens to start, one of the main ingredients to keep the fire going and burning is air. When trying to keep a fire contained to one place, it is important to try to keep big gushes of air from entering a room or car. The less air the fire has, the lesser amount of damage that you might end up with. This is sometimes really hard to do. If you are faced with fire, try to stay calm. This can be very hard to do as well.

As long as there is air, a fire will keep traveling until the air supply is gone. When you have a fire outside, all of the air will help the fire move and if wind becomes an issue, the fire can become out of control. Our firefighters have a lot of problems with putting out all of the fires they have to deal with on a daily basis. They put their lives on the line every time they go to answer a fire call. Not only do they have to go and put out fires at homes and businesses, but they also have to answer calls for car fires.

In some situations they have to have air tanks on their backs which will help them breathe. These air tanks are very flammable. They really have to be very careful when they go to move around a fire. Most of the time these firefighters can get almost all kinds of fires under control, but the worst ones for them to deal with are arson type fires. The reason for this is because these types are usually out of control right from the start. These types are always set to destroy and substances like gasoline or kerosene are often used to make the fire burn more quickly.

If you should have a small fire, especially in the kitchen, in some cases you might try to put it out by smothering it. Some people might try using baking soda. Some might even try using a metal pan from the kitchen to put over the top of the fire. Blankets or bedspreads can also be used to put out a small fire in a living room or bedroom. If it gets out of control, get out of the home and call in your fire department quickly.
