Technology for ESL

Teacher Learning Activities
By:Joseph Elmadam

Through teacher learning activities, teachers can gain new skills, adopt new trends in education and can generally improve their careers. These activities are also geared toward improving instructional methods in the classroom and thereby helping students to meet their learning goals. Due to technology, teachers are now able to access a wide range of resources for their professional development and continued learning.

Technology Coaching Programs
Learning about technology and gaining technology skills is an essential teacher learning activity. The introduction of technology into the education process requires teachers to learn how to instruct with technology. Participating in technology training programs in school or at the community learning centers is a good place to start. Resources such as Web Quest help teachers to learn how to use the Internet while engaging their students.

Teacher Internships
Taking up a teacher internship is an excellent way of gaining deeper understanding about a subject. You can serve some time in institutions such as museums for history and research centers for social science teachers. Through these activities teachers are able to engage in intellectual and professional learning about their own subjects. Findings from working in research centers can also help a teacher understand the developmental and cognitive processes of their students. With these skills, instructional and classroom management methods can be improved.

Teacher Study Groups
Teacher study groups are formal or informal settings where teachers interact with each other. Whether they are formal or informal, teachers exchange ideas and learn new instructional strategies. Activities that take place in teacher study groups include reading and discussing professional books, viewing educational-related videos and presentations from veteran teachers. New teachers and those seeking professional networks will find these groups especially helpful.

Teacher-to-Teacher Collaboration
Collaborating with teachers across the country and globally can open up many learning and career-growth opportunities. Through these online collaborations, educators can find others with similar professional interests and exchange information about educational trends. Teachers can also have live chats, online group forums and share ideas through "wikis" and blogs.
