Math Teaching Ideas Using Technology
By:Mary Johnson-Gerard, Ph.D.

As technology use increases, teachers must adjust their teaching styles to keep up with the growing trend. Technology is integrated into mathematics lessons for secondary students regularly and is finding its way into elementary classrooms. When teaching math to young children using technology, it doesn't need to be elaborate. Basic math skills can be taught with the use of calculators, online resources and CD-based computer games.

Calculator
Children should be taught arithmetic using a pencil and paper first. The calculator is not designed to be a crutch but a useful tool at the right times. When teaching children how to use a calculator, the most important skill to teach is the appropriate time to use it. In early school years, the calculator needs to be used rarely and only as fun math activity. Students will develop stronger calculator skills as they take algebra in middle school. Teach calculator skills as early as kindergarten or first grade by allowing the students to add 1 to each number. Give them a worksheet with equations that look like 1 +1 = __, 2+1 =__ and 3+1 =__. This activity allows them to play with the calculator yet also requires them to write down answers and begin to see the pattern of adding one to a number.

Online Resources
Computers are a standard classroom resource. The Internet provides a wealth of online math resources for students of all ages. For young children, using technology like a computer on a regular basis will provide them with the skills and experience to be successful in the coming school years. Websites like A Plus Math offer simple addition flashcard games for first and second graders where the student types in the answer and the game keeps score. Eggy's World offers another addition game where there are many answers floating around the equation and you click on one with your mouse.

CD Computer Games
Computer games that are played on the CD-ROM of your computer are another way to integrate technology into your classroom. Offering this type of learning removes the need for getting on the Internet if you are in a busy classroom and can't monitor computer usage at all times. Educational websites like Scholastic offer math games on CD-ROM for a variety of age ranges. Games like How Many Bugs in a Box teach math problem solving and are suitable for pre-K to second grade because the difficulty level can be adjusted. This website also offers Thinking Skills, a game on developing early math skills by teaching classifying, sequencing and matching.
