Technology for ESL

How to Integrate Technology in Schools
By:Jack Powell

Technology is an important part of everyday life. It is essential to everyday operations in both our business and personal lives. With so much technology available to the public, it is important to educate ourselves on its uses. This education can begin as early as primary school, and becomes more important during high school.

Find out what type of technology is being used in the public schools. If students are using computers in the classrooms, see how old they are. Generally, computers need to be capable of running the latest operating systems and corresponding programs. If there are no computers available for students to use, find out what type of system would be most beneficial to students and teachers. This information will give you an idea of where to start looking for installation, equipment upkeep, software and prices of these items. If the school is more business and science oriented, PC computers are the most beneficial. If your school is focused on digital multimedia, Apple computers are the best choice.

Once you find prices on everything the school needs to integrate technology into the classrooms, write a proposal for the school board to consider. Be as detailed as possible in the proposal. Make sure to mention use of local vendors that could possibly give your school a discount and explain how the use of technology in the classrooms would enhance student performance. All these details will affect the school board's decision.

Once you receive funding for the project, make sure all installations are carried out according to the plan. It is important to oversee all aspects of this process to avoid as many problems as possible. When issues do arise, keep calm and work through them patiently with your team and the school staff.

Bring in qualified personnel to train teachers and administrators in the operation of the new technology. Teachers and administrators must be able to operate the system, so that they can properly teach the students. Be sure to attend all scheduled training sessions and ask questions when confused.

Monitor the progress of students and staff using the new technology. Provide ongoing technical support and training as often as possible. Install system updates as required. Most important, always back up the information on your system. Backups will prove beneficial if something happens to render the technology inoperable for a period of time.
