How to Use Skype to Teach English
By:Julia Estrela

The Internet provides numerous opportunities for English teachers of all backgrounds to teach ESL. One widespread method of online teaching involves the use of Skype, a powerful application that provides users with free Internet voice chatting service. Skype's ability to instantaneously connect people worldwide makes it a useful tool for ESL teachers looking to reach a broad student body. Unlike traditional teaching jobs, using Skype to teach English gives teachers the freedom to set their own schedules, curriculum and fees.

Download the free Skype application from the website and set up an account. When creating a user name, keep in mind that it will be visible to students. Choose names that are simple and professional.

Search for ESL teaching jobs online. The market for teaching English online is broad, with jobs ranging from business English to simple conversation classes. Research the different types of positions to get an idea of what each entails. Common places to look include Internet job boards and online teaching and learning communities. Some websites are quite structured, offering tools such as online schedulers and work logs, while others simply advertise available opportunities.

Write a resume targeted for teaching English as a second language. Though many online teaching jobs do not require a formal resume, this is a good way to organize and keep track of credentials, experience and qualifications.

Create a brief introductory profile to display on Internet job boards and teaching sites. Online ESL teachers include everyone from certified professionals to stay-at-home moms. Regardless of your experience, treat the profile like a mini-cover letter. Include any information that showcases your abilities as an English teacher. This short introduction is what will set you apart from other teacher candidates. It is the first thing that prospective students will see, so it is important to maintain a friendly, yet professional tone.

Apply to an existing job or post your profile online. Most sites require users to register prior to responding to an ad or joining a formal teaching community. Registration is typically free, though some sites offer teachers the option of paid advertising. This is a useful way for teachers to draw attention to their profiles and attract new students.

Use Skype to teach English online. Use a Skype headset to communicate with students as you would over a phone. Alternatively, use the application to chat over instant messenger or to send and receive files. Skype also allows users to conduct conference calls and connect using a webcam.

Cultivate good working relationships with your students. Avoid canceling classes, be on time and be prepared. Online teaching sites are full of available English teachers. Good ratings and positive feedback make the difference between successful and unsuccessful online teachers.
