Technology for ESL

How to Plan for Integrating Technology in Schools
By:Shelley Gray

Technology is one of the most important aspects in schools today. In our rapidly changing world, teachers can use it to improve teaching and learning and to strengthen existing curricula. However, the use of technology in a school setting requires a carefully thought-out technology plan that outlines all aspects of the implementation. The plan will be ongoing, as technology is ever-evolving. When creating a plan for integrating technology, there are several important steps that should be followed.

Form a committee that consists of educators, parents, students, community members and business leaders with technology expertise. The committee will be responsible for reviewing the current school plan and researching the technological needs within the school. Committee members will also be involved in establishing a vision, goals and steps for implementation.

Become familiar with effective uses of technology within other schools. Through examining the ways that other schools use technology, the committee can make a plan for implementation and use. Additionally, the committee should discuss which essential skills are being targeted with the plan. Essential skills include those required to succeed in today's world.

Develop an awareness of the school's budget and the amounts that will allocated to technology. The budget must be able to cover not only the initial purchase, but training, support and maintenance. The committee should also look at budget allocation for future years so that the plan can include how the school's technology will evolve each year.

Develop a plan for professional development and support for teachers. Teachers must be able to see the advantages of using the technology and subsequently carry out the goals of the plan. To do so, they may require extensive training, experience and time to reflect.

Assess the plan. Assessments should take place before, during and after implementation. Encourage all staff and any interested community members to be involved in assessments that will provide you will information to drive future planning. The assessments should show proof that the money spent on technology is valuable to the school's overall operation and vision.
