Yes, we have had problems with people like this before, claiming they are conducting surveys and that the information will be kept confidential. You are right, nobody knows how that information could be used. It is also true that the NSA and other spy/intelligence agencies have spied on millions of Americans, they also have facilities in places like Australia. Responding to surveys via internet is not a good idea!
