TEFL Qualifications - CertTESOL & MA TESOL

CertTESOL

Administrated through Trinity College London, this has traditionally been viewed as being roughly equivalent by employers around the world and like the CELTA can be studied in different places around the world. It contains widely the same content as a CELTA course but in my opinion CELTA has now overtaken it as the qualification most worth having.

CELTA is getting a wider acceptance among Americans than the CertTESOL and this combined with the already high popularity in the Commonwealth countries means that CELTA is likely to continue to have a wider appeal.

This in no way diminishes the usefulness of a CertTESOL in most employers' eyes. In the choice between a CertTESOL and any other TEFL certificate (other than CELTA) the CertTESOL will undeniably open more doors, and is of equal value in terms of preparing you to teach. It also costs the same at £1,500 no matter where in the world you take the course.

MA TESOL

Still the most favored qualification for American EFL teachers. If you eventually want to work as an EFL teacher in a University in the States or another English speaking country then you need this type of qualification.

It has serious downsides though; the price is hugely expensive and it tends very theoretical as opposed to the hands on and relevance of the CELTA or CertTESOL certificates although some MA TESOL courses do have a practical part now.

For practical teaching experience CELTA in particular is becoming more and more accepted in the US. However, having any masters degree it will enable you to get better jobs in Universities in Asia. This does make it a somewhat attractive option, but the price is a big issue. Some universities on the East coast of the US charge $50,000 for a MA TESOL, and if you are a UK "home student" it will cost about £4,000 in fees alone.

Teaching English abroad can be lots of fun but many teachers could increase their pay without a lot of effort by following the advise at [http://loveteflhatethepay.com]

Christopher John has helped hundreds of (TEFL) English Teachers abroad to double their pay without increasing their working hours.

If you are a TEFL teacher or are thinking about getting into TEFL then you owe it to yourself to let Christopher John help you earn more at [http://loveteflhatethepay.com]
