Turnoi, you are probably correct. I think the qustions may be similar to those you mentioned. I just think, what is the point of people learning this stuff? I know a lot of English major students who have a good grasp of the language, but they could not tell me what a subordinate clause is for instance. They usually know what an adjective, verb, noun is, and also what synonymns are. Maybe CL can tell us the test requirements for his CELTA admission?

I stopped teaching any advanced grammar in my classes last year because I failed to see the value of it.

Better to focus on increasing vocabulary and obtaining good pronunciation skills, that is what leads to fluency. I would even argue that a person can become almost fluent in a language with poor grammar knowledge of the language ( maybe you disagree )

My knowledge of Chinese grammar is poor, but people still understand me ( usually ) when I speak Chinese. Just like I understand English speaking Chinese people who make many grammar mistakes.

IMHO, I think many English language students need to focus on their writing skill more than learning grammar. Punctuation and capitalization is often poor when I read papers written by Chinese students. On a resume this can make the difference between getting a job or being rejected.

No good focusing on advanced grammar if students can't get the basics right.
