Tips For Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages (TESOL)

Teaching English overseas can be a memorable experience, where you can combine your love for teaching and travelling. You can choose from a variety of countries. In Slovakia for instance, English has become compulsory for students from the third grade at all primary schools in the coming school year. In the European Union (EU) overall, ninety per cent of the students learn English. However, remember that you will need an EU passport to teach there.

Here are some tips for getting a TESOL job overseas-

1. Find out what is the pay standard, contract length, and visa requirements in the country you plan to teach in. Next, search on job sites or contact teachers in that country for openings.

2. There will be more competition for better paying jobs, so ask yourself what is the salary you wish to earn. If you want to save some money, jobs in European countries may pay more than ones in Asia.

3. Age restrictions may apply in the country you plan to teach in, so check beforehand. Some countries discourage older applicants, so you should know the policy of the nation you want to get a job in.

4. A bachelor's degree and a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate is usually required for teaching overseas.

5. You are likely to find your stay more comfortable if you're familiar with the language of the country you'll be teaching in. Even if you don't know the language before you reach, be open to learning it from your students.

6. Find out what concepts your students should know by the time they finish their course. In case you differ on some points regarding this, put your view across tactfully. As an outsider, you will be viewed more favorably if you work within the system.

7. Devise a lesson plan which is interactive and enjoyable, so that your students look forward to class. Consider using multimedia like videos to make classes more interesting.

8. Balance your classes between written and spoken English, so that students can practice their communication skills by conversing with each other.

TESOL can be rewarding, as you feel that you are making a difference to the lives of others. Monitoring openings on specialist sites can lead you to the job you want.
