Hello all! I hold a B.A on English from the university of Athens, I'm Greek myself but I also hold Canadian citizenship. I have some experience (2 years) in teaching English to young learners in Greece, my English is fluent and my pronunciation is very good, as I was taught by my father who's native. Nevertheless, I have suffered the non-native discrimination in an attempt to seek a teaching job in Spain and yes, it's too frustrating when employers don't even call to listen how good or bad you speak. So, after four years of studying and two in teaching I think it's about time to "upgrade" my qualifications and do a course that would help me improve my skills both as a teacher and as a speaker of English. Initially, I was thinking of an M.A somewhere in the UK (Warwick, Lancaster, Edinburgh) but ultimately I'm considering the U of Toronto Certificate in TESOL. It's an eight-month program with 30 hours of class observation and 20 hours of teaching plus living in Toronto. If I do it however I'll spend all the money I had saved for the masters and I don't know whether I'll be able to do it some day. The program looks pretty complete, with solid theory foundation and lots of hours practising. The question is if completing such a program will help me improve my chances of getting a good teaching post in Europe. Also, what is the situation in Canada for the certified non-native English teachers? Do you think I could find a job somewhere in a language institute? I'm not so interested in what it pays as in the experience. I'll appreciate your good advice!
