Is a BA necessary to teach ESL in the USA? (CELTA, No Degree)

Hello,
I am a freelance writer with many years of experience, have been a part-time teaching assistant, and am planning to take a Celta course very soon. However, I do not have a BA. Could anyone tell me whether they think having experience and a Celta will be enough to apply for ESL jobs in my home of Chicago? Does anyone have experience of teaching ESL in the United States? I have had mixed reports, so would really appreciate any insight.
Best wishes,
Mia
