Hi, Rob
It's true you may need a European passport for a teaching job in Italy. But, if I'm honest, I didn't have mine until my 5th year teaching. We could say that Italy is a little relaxed when it comes to regulations. If this is a big career move, or you need the money on contract, pick a different country. But if you want great food and an adventure while building your ESL teaching experience, give it a try. A note of caution: you'll want to research your options thoroughly.
The website below has some valuable and very specific information on teaching English in Italy.

Buona Fortuna! (Good luck!)
