Edible Souvenirs - Bringing Home a Taste of Vacation
By:Lisa Koosis

One of the high-points of vacation for many travelers is being able to sample local cuisine. Whether it's seafood on the coast or great Southern barbecue, many regions have their own specialties when it comes to food. Vermont and other New England states tout maple syrup, maple candies, and all things maple. In Maine, Lobster and blueberries are standard fare. And who could even think of Georgia without thinking of peaches or of Washington without thinking apples? So if you're in love with the cuisine of your favorite vacation destination, then why not consider bringing home a taste of it as a souvenir.

In many popular vacation destinations, you can find goodies to bring home even among the standard, tacky souvenir fare. Sweets are a popular take-home item: fudge, saltwater taffy, maple candies, chocolate-covered fruit. In Maine you'll find chocolate-covered blueberries and in many seaside destinations, chocolate-covered cranberries abound.

It's a great idea to hit local farmer's markets and farm stands. Besides fruits and vegetables, these businesses often offer locally-made products such as breads, candies, syrups, and other regional favorites On your way home, be sure to pick up a bushel of your favorite local produce, whether it's apples, Florida oranges, or the like.

Don't be afraid to ask at your favorite restaurants. Many now sell pre-packaged bottles of sauces and seasonings that you can bring home with you. Others will ship baked goods and other treats to many areas of the world.

Grocery stores are another great place to look. In more touristy areas, you'll find areas of the store specifically geared towards local products. These can include cans of chowders and other soups, sodas and drinks available only in the region, and other regional fare.

For more sophisticated tastes, try local gourmet shops. There, often you'll find special blends of seasonings used in local cuisine, as well as accessories of the trade (think lobster bibs or grapefruit spoons).

Of course, don't forget to hit the bookstore. One of the best ways to bring a taste of your favorite vacation spot home is by buying a regional cookbook. Cookbooks penned by local authors are best for giving you direction for adding true regional authenticity to your cooking.

There are many ways to bring home a sampling of tastes from travel spots. Be creative, and don't ever hesitate to ask. Edible souvenirs are a treat for everyone, and dining like you're away on vacation is one of the best ways to bring a little life to your family all year round.
