Jewelry should be packed into a small secure container of some sort that will not crush or open easily. If you can, fit the container in your purse, if not it should be in a carry on bag that locks. Never put valuable jewelry in a bag that is stored under the plane. You might get it back or you might not.

When traveling in some places tourist are often targets for thieves. If the area you are going to be in is known for pickpockets and muggings, by all means do not wear your good jewelry. Wait until you are in a safer environment to wear the good stuff! The last thing you want to have to think about on vacation is being robbed, and if you are flaunting valuable looking pieces of jewelry, it could attract attention alright, the wrong kind!
