The Airport Power Bandits!
By:Fred Tittle

You have probably seen them lurking in corners, often sitting in weird positions watchful that they will be found out and asked to move on. Sadly there is no 12 step program to help them. They are addicted and they can’t help themselves, they get absorbed with one thing, get juice! They stare transfixed at power icons or scan with nervous eyes. They are venerable and they know it, as their power cords suck precious juice into their computers.

Some airports understand their need and make electricity available, as they know that it is cruel and unusual punishment to have your computer on a long flight, and not have power for it. Why the big deal about this, very simple, airplanes are one of the few places that you can not be disturbed, no phone, no doors and no internet. If the water cooler time waster wants to break into this space, he or she needs wings and a lot of determination!

One of my favorite airports, Singapore, even gives you absolutely free access to the internet via “WiFi“ or jacking in with a network cord that they will even supply! Bangkok’s new airport on the other hand, you really need to be on your toes, as the security guys are ever vigilant. The real shame here is that Singapore has very little fees, yet they give you comfortable seats with spacious desks and power points, conveniently located next to the java stalls, for when you are on a roll and need some liquid sleep Bangkok the newest international airport in Asia, has some of the highest prices in Asia for airport fees, right behind, which is the perfect term here, Phnom Penh. That Suvarnabhumi doesn’t have this tells me that the airport must have been designed by paranoid security consultant or druids!

Phnom Penh is really bad, as they have the weirdest plugs I have ever seen and I live in Cambodia and I can’t find a adaptor to jack in with, you think for the $25 exit fee, they could spare a little electricity for the power poor travelers that don’t fly on Bangkok Air.

If this article has touched you, and you feel sorry for these folks, you are probably wondering how you can help? It’s a simple gesture, the next time you see one getting his power fix; park your luggage cart if front of them to give them a little extra cover. Thanks in advance!
