Travel Tips

Travel With My Pet - How to Take a Pet on an Airplane
By:K Murphy

Fortunately, bringing your pets on an airplane is not an impossibility. Many airlines now accept pets as both passengers and cargo. Which way your pet travels will depend largely on its size, as well as your preferences. In general, large animals that can't comfortably fit into a carrier will travel as cargo. If your pet is small, such as a cat or a small dog, it may be able to board the plane with you as carry-on luggage or even sit in a carrier in the seat next to you (you'll have to pay for an extra seat for this).

There are several other "travel with my pet" considerations you'll need to address as you're getting ready for your trip. The most important of these are:

1. Make sure your pet is able to stand up and turn around comfortably in its container. If it isn't, you'll need to put your pet in a crate and ship it as cargo.

2. Before the trip, put a collar on your pet that has a tag with its name, as well as your address and telephone number, in case he gets lost. As more and more people fly, more and more pets fly as well.

3. Make sure you keep water available to your house throughout the flight. If your pet is traveling in a crate, keep a water bowl in the crate. If he's going by carrier and will be with you, keep a water bottle in your purse or luggage, and give him a sip every half hour or so during the flight.

4. Bring a copy of your pet's vaccination records with you, and keep a separate copy at home. If your pet's vaccination status is questioned during your trip, you'll need this.

5. Bring your veterinarian's contact information.

If you're wondering, "Is travel with my pet possible?," it is. You just have to prepare in advance, and make sure you've got everything in order before you go. If you have any questions about pet regulations for the airlines, call the airline on which you'll be flying before booking your trip and ask them about their particular pet rules. That way, you'll know just what to expect before you board.

Inspired by a BAD traveling experience with my pet, I vowed I would never put my pet - or myself - through that again. After a few searches for quality "traveling with pets" information, I discovered there wasn't much.

BringtheKids has just one goal: Provide quality and relevant information to owners traveling with pets. What does that mean for you? Less wasted time and less stress. From departure to destination, you will be well informed every step of the way.
