Travel Safety Tips For Tourists Abroad
By:Alton D.

Each year thousands of tourists visit foreign countries. Unfortunately, many of these same tourists become victims of crimes. In order to avoid this from happening, travelers should be more security conscious. Here are some travel safety tips that I suggest to help keep tourists safe while visiting a foreign country.

1) Be aware of your surroundings. Notice who is around you at all times. Make mental notes about descriptions of people near you. Are they male or female? What's there race? How tall are they? What color hair do they have? These are the first questions a police officer will ask you in the event you are a victim of a crime.

2) Avoid social distractions. Many people love to talk on a cell phone or listen to mp3 players to prevent boredom. However, this can be dangerous. It sends a signal to a criminal that you are not paying attention. As a result, you could easy have your pockets picked or be attacked from behind.

3) Do not carry your passport on your person while walking around. You should instead get a copy of the passport and carry it with you. In the event that a thief steals your belongings or you are robbed, your passport will not be stolen.

4) Refrain from carrying large bags or purses. Doing so makes you a more visual target for criminals. You are also letting them know that you most likely have your passport, money, and credit card with you. All these items are desired by criminals.

5) Try not to travel alone. It is better to travel with others because lone travelers are more likely to be attacked than groups.

6) Inform others of your travel plans. In the event that something happens to you, the people you told can assist in search and rescue efforts. They will be able to inform authorities of your plans, which will give them reference points for an investigation.

7) Contact your embassy or consulate before traveling and ask about the crime situation in the country you intend to visit.

Tourists abroad should understand that practicing sound security precautions can both help keep them safe and ensure they have a more enjoyable experience.
