Common Mistakes When Building A Quality Website
By:Johnny H

A Google search on ‘how to build a website’ will give you hundreds of thousands websites with simple text and video tutorials, most tender rock-solid theory and ideas, but which teach you why and how you be supposed to do things?

Furthermore, how do you identify that your design and coding is in the best interest of your client and the visitors of the site? For the sake of this, here is a list of common mistakes that are made while designing a website, so you can keep away from them when designing your own site.

• Don’t force a new window to open. Leave the visitor’s web browser alone, don’t resize it or force a new window to open it as it is a total disservice to your site visitors and leaves a bad experience.

• Omit the welcome screen. The welcome (aka Enter Here) screen is 100% meaningless and provides no point for your website visitors, despite how cool you might think it looks. Moreover, since no content is on it, it also affects ranking in search engines. Sideways from being a web design mistake, it is also a SEO mistake too.

• Allow the visitor turn music on/off. In no way force your visitor to listen to music; they might be in a public place that isn’t suitable for music to play. Either way allow them make a decision if they want to listen to it or not.

• Don’t overlook the contact page. Contact page is one of the most important pieces of any website. Nowadays, many websites are lacking a contact page. I am wondering how this happens, but remember that it is one of the most important page of your website.

• Make use of easily readable fonts in graphic elements. Many web designers create graphical elements to signify fancy text into site designs. Make sure they are not too big or too small and are easily readable. There would be no meaning in creating content that no one can read easily.

• Check browser compatibility. Test your site in several browsers and at different screen resolutions to make sure it’s browser compatibility. Horizontal or vertical scrolling is not an acceptable way to view a page, so try to avoid scrolling. As a normal practice, most web designers do not use Internet Explorer as their default browser, but remember that it is still installed on millions of computers. Spending a few hours on checking browser compatibility will result in a good traffic flow in the long run.

• Do not use pop-ups. Try to avoid pop-ups as it is not well liked by many internet users. Moreover, advanced web browsers such as Firefox block almost all of these by default. Also, tabbed browsing is available in almost all browsers – so, pop-ups are dead.

Trying to avoid the above common web design mistakes will guarantee your site keeps traffic and is readable, fresh and fun for all who visit it.
