Designing a Website
By:Val McQueen

When designing a website, you should resist the temptation of having it done in a manner that compromises the original intention of having the website.

The secret to having a usable website is to stay relevant in the website user's eyes. It can be disheartening to read a pile of gibberish only to discover that it does not benefit you in any way. Give details and instructions that are worth the site visitor's time. Have a flow in the ideas that you communicate.

You should be able to serve the menu that the site visitor wants, and do it fast. However, do not be carried away and serve it in a manner that slows down everything, complicates the surfing experience and makes it difficult to find his way around.

You can have a good-looking website but if it does not attract customers efficiently, it will be as useless as a road sign that is wrapped in good-looking gift-wrap. A search engine will not sniff out the keywords required to attract sales.

The most important thing in a website is content. You do not have to burst your brains with sophisticated stuff if your content is not likely to please visitors.

You will be shocked that most site visitors will settle for an average layout as long as the website still answers the questions that they wish to be answered. You would rather have a layout that is simple compared to one that is complex yet grossly irrelevant. Navigation is the key, and navigation has to come together with topical relevance. Make sure that all your content has a clear meaning.

Think of the end user before you upload your website. Give it a hundred and one test runs to make sure it makes the cut. It is better to take more time on the details than to hit a dead end.

It is advisable to be meticulous in the final stages of developing your website before uploading it. Think of all the possible reasons that it may fail to run smoothly. Look out for those bugs. They are never obvious. Testing is the best option to have a successful site, which is free from any interruptions that will arise from inconsistencies that could have been avoided with a little extra caution.
