How to Increase Student Achievement by Creating a Classroom Web Page
By:Shelley Frost

Classroom websites serve a number of functions, from updating parents on classroom events to expanding classroom activities. Effective use of the classroom webpage with students helps them improve their understanding of classroom concepts. Classroom website use is flexible and should serve primarily as a supplement to regular instruction, rather than as the only teaching tool. Using a website also teaches kids computer skills that prove useful in many areas of life.

Outline your goals for the classroom website. Define specifically how you will use the website and how you expect the students to benefit. Keep these goals in mind as you create and use the website with the students.

Create a simple homepage that is easy for the students to navigate. Consider the age of the students when developing the website. Add a prominent link to the student work area that the kids will access during classwork.

Develop a resources or reference section for the kids, using website links you have prescreened. This gives the kids a way to find their own answers, particularly if they are working on homework after school. Update the resources page as new topics of study are introduced.

Incorporate web-based assignments as enrichment activities. WebQuest activities are a popular option. You can also include printable practice problems for different subjects or links to online educational games to supplement current educational topics.

Post homework assignments on the website so students who are sick have access from home.

Develop a section of the classroom website aimed at the parents. Use the parent section to keep them updated on classroom events, assignments and achievements. A resources section for parents who help their kids with homework is another key element to the parent section. This involves parents in their children's accountability.
