How to Create My Own Educational Webpage
By:Brad Conway

Creating an educational webpage follows a similar process as creating any webpage. The major distinction that separates educational webpages from others is their focus on learning. Educational webpages can be teacher-created sites for classroom materials and discussion blogs, school-created sites for parents and students to learn about a district's policies, or individual-created sites that present information on various subjects. Content and technical components are the main criteria used to assess the strength and effectiveness of an educational website.

Select a domain for your website. A domain name is the site address for your webpage. It must communicate your webpage's purpose and be unique. Determine what you want your domain name to be and search to see if it is already in existence. If it is available, you may use it as your web address.

Establish your domain name. Often, you must purchase your domain from a host site, such as Yahoo!. Find a domain provider. If you agree to their terms and conditions, sign up and your domain name will be published.

Design your site's structure. Use webpage design software to create the site you envisioned. Create a home page and as many subsidiary pages as desired. Each page should have a title and links to other pages in the site. Make sure that the site is visually appealing, easy to navigate, and accessible on most of the major web browsers.

Organize your website. For example, if you are a teacher and want to create a site for all of your classroom materials, you may want to organize your site by each class you teach or by categories, such as "Daily Lessons," "Homework," and "Upcoming Assignments." Brainstorm ideas prior to actually creating your site to avoid having to make superfluous changes to the site.

Incorporate content. Regardless of the type of site you design, all educational websites should be appropriate for their target audience, be a subject you are an expert in to establish credibility, provide accurate and current information, provide objectives and goals on the homepage, and contain links to external sources. Educational website content should be written in an authoritative tone to assure readers that the site can be trusted.

Proofread your site's content. Make sure that your site is polished before uploading as any errors can severely impact credibility and professionalism --- especially on an educational webpage.

Publish or upload your site. The first upload may take a while depending on how large your site is. Subsequent changes to your site will not take as long to publish. Once your site successfully publishes, it will be available on-line for anyone to view.
