How to Make a Website for Kids
By:Melanie L. Marten

Building a website for kids requires more than colorful graphics and a playful tone. Ensuring privacy and safety is vital for parents' comfort and usability for kids of all ages. Combine security with fun for a quality website for kids.

Make a Website for Kids

Register a domain name (website address) that has something to do with kids and the theme of your website. Choose a name that is relatively short and easy to remember.

Sign up for a website hosting account. Be sure the one you choose has ample space and bandwidth for the kids' website you intend to build. Copy the names of the servers of the website hosting to the domain name you purchased. This will point the domain name to the website itself.

Design the website according to the theme. Kids' websites are often brightly colored with cartoon characters and large headings, which are easier to read. You may hire a website designer, create your own or use one of the many free templates available online. A website for kids should be easy to navigate.

Include pages of interest for kids. This will depend on the type of site you are building, but can include things like school and education help, fun games, jokes and cartoons. Do not use any copyrighted material without permission. Write or design the content for these website pages with kids in mind.

Create a "For Parents" page that includes all privacy information and answers any questions you think parents will have. Informing them that no links on the website will take the children to dangerous sites is vital. Also, remind them it is ultimately their responsibility for their kids' Internet usage.
