A high school website provides a learning tool for current and future students as well as their parents. Adding pages for athletics and clubs focuses attention on events at your school and helps keep the community up to date on school news. High school websites can offer valuable information on report cards, exam schedules and guidance. Developing a website requires knowledge of web editing, but with a template and HTML tutorials, creating a homepage for your school takes less time and effort than starting from scratch.

Create a site map. First, find other high school websites and see how their pages represent their schools. High schools such as Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida set up a home page that lists academics and curriculum, athletics, clubs and organizations, faculty and staff and other school information. In addition, the website posts schedules, clinic information, news, daily bulletins, important dates and email directories. The website shows the school's colors and mascot.

Organize your school site's navigational links. A busy homepage with too much information is unattractive. Instead, provide a basic homepage with a large picture of the school and links to separate pages. In general, your links want to direct to a "history'' or "about'' page.

Choose a template to work with. Free website templates show a variety of collars, link patterns, and sidebars. Many site templates show you how to input all of the information. Some template websites are Template Monster, Stylish Template and Webzone Templates. WebsiteTemplates.org provides many free school website templates.

Select key design features such as pictures, fonts, colors, and borders. Stick to ta theme related to your school. School colors and a mascot can show school pride. Pictures of the school, athletic teams and teachers provide visuals. Depending on the template you select, there should be spaces for pictures with preselected fonts, colors and borders. If you are familiar with HTML you may change these fonts, colors and borders as you wish. If you do not know HTML, then stick to the template fonts and colors, or you can try using Lissa Explains for HTML help or other tutorials.

Upload the page to your school's server. After the site's code is fully edited and finished to your liking, you need to upload the site's code to a server. If there is already a server for websites, ask for help from the school's web administrator or another school administrator. If not, you need an FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, to upload the website.
