This is excellent advice you have provided for people who want to learn how to be writers.

Several years ago, a friend of mine who was a writer for the Los Angeles Times in California spoke to an ESL class of mine at a local Community College. During his talk, he emphasized to the students that good readers are good writers, and good writers are good readers. He also encouraged them to read anything and everything, including the Comics from the Newspaper.
