Writing and Public Speaking
An important consideration that is often overlooked by writers is establishing a productive workspace. Most people don't think about it very much, but your workspace environment is critical to your success in writing. There are a number of criteria that should be considered when establishing your writing workspace, and we will discuss these in this article.
Everyone has different preferences for their workspace environment. For some, the best place is the Starbucks down the street, while for others it is the desk in the back corner of the garage at home. The one thing that all good workspaces have in common is that they are far removed from any distractions that will draw you away from the task at hand. In this case, that task is writing your book.
The types of distractions to look out for include family, friends, television, stereo, and the anti-effectiveness tool of the century: the telephone. Working at the kitchen table, while surrounded by all these distractions is a surefire recipe for never finishing your book. Place yourself somewhere you are sure to be able to keep a clear thought process going, and where you are able to shut the rest of the world out.
Another consideration for establishing your workspace is to make sure that it is a place you love to be, and long to return to when you are away. If it works for you, surround your workspace with inspirational quotes on post-it notes, or flowers, or whatever works for you. In my workspace, I have a picture of a shiny yellow Porsche 911 Turbo, a house on the beach, and the playground to which I like to take my son. These are the things that motivate me to do what I do, and that is what you should do with your workspace.
No matter what you decide is right for you, make sure that your writing workspace is conducive to writing. If you are constantly being interrupted or distracted by your surroundings, it is time to reconsider whether this is the right workspace for you. Though it may be a simple, and seemingly unimportant thing, an effective workspace will prove to be your most valuable asset in completing that book you've always wanted to write.
