Creative Writing - Let's Get Creative - What's Your Story?
By:Marjorie J McDonald

Stories have been the way information has been handed down through the years. As you think about the stories in your family that are commonly told and retold when your family members are in contact with each other, there will be those you want to hear again and those that embarrass you every time you hear them. You know how your family members delight in reminding you of those stories laughing at your embarrassment.

So, now it's time to take one of those moments and get creative with it so it changes from embarrassing to entertaining. Some of the funniest comedy skits have come out of those exact situations you might have experienced.

Write out what you can remember about the incident. Interview other family members about what they remember about the incident and add that to your collection. See if friends of the family who might have been present remember any of the details. As you will discover, everyone will remember the incident in a different way. Now it is time to capture as many collective details as you can.

Next, see if you can do a creative embellishment of the incident and use things that happened to you that really were funny and see if any of those elements can be added to this story. Keep adding and tweaking until when you read the story it seems entertaining to you and no longer embarrassing.

At your next family event, read the new version to your family members and get their feedback. They might be able to add new perspectives you hadn't thought of adding. Soon you will be telling your new story and what used to be an embarrassment to you can bring you great joy as well as lots of laughter. The good news is that what your family will now remember is the new improved version and you can breathe a sigh of relief that the original story has been replaced.

And now I invite you to join me for a series of writing exercises to help you discover your areas of interest in writing as well as increasing your creativity. You may access these exercises by visiting http://www.freecreativewritingstrategies.com
