How to Write a Reference Letter
By:Francis Jock

You deserve the perfect apartment, you've completed the application and the rest of the paper work. The only thing left for you to do is to get a character reference letter from someone. Not a problem for you, but what should it say, or not say about you. This article explores the little known elements that make up the perfect character reference letter to get you that perfect apartment.

The first thing you should know is that landlords are people, too. They have a financial stake in their property and don't want to rent it to anyone that's going to unduly damage the apartment. If you have a good track record of keeping your previous apartments in good condition, then you're in the clear. Your best character reference will come from your most recent landlord. With a good rental history you shouldn't have any problem getting a good character reference letter. It won't hurt to remind the landlord, or whomever authors your letter, that you have an excellent record of paying your rent and utilities on time, you always get along well with your neighbors, and never had any complaints. In short, you get along well with others and they get along well with you. Naturally, your prospective landlord is going to want more than that. In these days it's very likely that they will do a background check and a credit check, just for starters. While you may have a good idea about what your credit score is, you should be prepared to explain any deficient areas, if necessary. Everyone has a bump in the road at times, and as long as you have a reasonable explanation and are able to show how you have taken steps to prevent the recurrence of prior financial downturns, you should be good to go.

A great place to look for more ideas on what you could include in a character reference letter is the rental application form. Here you will discover different categories of information, each designed to give the landlord, or property manager, an idea about you as a prospective good renter. Look over your application form and think about the positive things you can say, then jot them down and be sure to convey them as ideas or suggestions to your character reference writer. It's always a good idea to have your character reference letter writer to end the letter casually, with an invitation to the landlord to contact him or her if they need more information or clarification about a certain statement.

Usually, a quick call to the author will resolve the matter, so be sure that they remember to include their telephone number or an e-mail address. The purpose of this article was to take a look at how to write a character reference letter in support of someone's application, perhaps yours, for the perfect apartment. A well-written character reference letter can be worth its weight in gold, and them some. In fact, it can be a priceless contribution to your success. With these tips in mind, you should be able to create a meaningful character reference letter or advise someone on how to write one on you behalf.
