Writing Reference Letters
By:Sturat Mitchel

Writing a reference letter is not always easy, especially if you are not very experienced in it. If you want to find out how to write a reference letter here are some interesting tips for you:

- First of all you need to write a rather polished and professional letter. You need to sound certain of what you are talking about and preferably, convincing enough. You don't need to write like an author, using metaphors and other language structures. No one wants to test your writing abilities, but needs some information from you so as to make a decision on a job, studies or something of that kind.

- You have to be honest and write something that has a certain value. You don't need to do a favour to someone; whether you are writing about you or recommending someone to a new employer, you need to get to the core, without unnecessary details and ramblings. Being honest you eliminate the chances to have something getting back to you.

- Be fair and try to keep some balance. Unless you are really enthusiastic about someone, try to avoid too extraordinary descriptions. If you think that a person has many advantages but also a few unimportant weaknesses, you can refer to them but denote their insignificance. The way you write something could affect and influence someone's decision, so you need to emphasize the most important and relevant issues and details. Keep some balance as well; no matter how good is someone, no one is perfect. Try to balance your letter, so as to make it look more credible.

- Put yourself in the position of the letter's recipient. Try to think what you would like to hear about someone and try to write according to this. Usually that can help you determine how to write a reference letter that will reflect in the most appropriate and pertinent way the qualities and weaknesses of the person in question.
