Question: What is the key to becoming a better writer?

Answer: Practice.

The number one thing you can do to become a great writer is to write every day. That means writing, every single day, even Sunday! We all need rest and relaxation but like any professional athlete the only way you will truly become a great writer is to write.

Don't think for one minute that today's successful writers and bestsellers became that way overnight. They didn't. Although it may seem to audiences all over the world who hear the stories of JK Rowling an unemployed single mother who was down to her last dollar and Stephenie Meyers another stay-at-home mother of three made good. They worked at their art and often into the early hours of the morning when the rest of us were sleeping!

Don't forget the warm up!

Like all great athletes the warm up is a crucial step before competing and writing is similar in that it takes time for the flow of ideas to come. Often a small exercise before getting into your serious writing may be helpful to settle you into the focus you need to be able to write well. The best way to become a great writer is to practice your art. Practice, practice, practice and more practice. It cannot be emphasized enough.

It is particularly beneficial for a writer to write every day, even if it is only 200 words per day. Do this every day for 21 days. As Dr Maxwell Maltz stated in his self-help book, Psycho-Cybernetics, it takes 21 days to develop a habit. After 21 days of writing 200 words or more per day you will find that your desire to write increases and your writing will improve markedly.

Start your first, 200 words, now!
