How to Write With Humor
By:Mary Simmers

Writing is hard enough. Injecting humor into your writing is even harder. If you've been meaning to develop a funny side to your written work, these tips might help.

1. Read funny stuff

Fill your reading list with stuff from the humor section. Note the types of comedy that work well in written form. Carefully watch how the writer builds up scenes going into the punch line.

2. Start conservatively

Don't attempt to write your next essay with non-stop comedy from start to finish. Instead, start slow. Throw in a punch line somewhere in the body of your next piece or insert a related joke as your opening. Get yourself acclimated to humor writing techniques before going all out.

3. Look out for opportunities to insert humor

There are many types of subjects that automatically lend themselves well to humorous writing (e.g. a strange-looking product or a funny incident). Watch out for those and grab the opportunity.

4. Vary your jokes

Vary your style of comedy throughout each piece your write. While a play on words might be funny, using the same for every paragraph of your 5,000-word article will turn wearisome fast.

5. Write like you're talking to a friend

We're usually most funny when surrounded with friends that we're fully comfortable with. You have to mimic the same feeling when you write if you want to bring out your inner comedian.

6. Don't let poor grammar ruin the moment

Even the funniest joke will fail to make its mark if your text is dripping with poor grammar and construction. As such, always use an English grammar software to make sure the reader gets to your punch line with no hitch.
