How to Have Awesome Writing
By:Collaborator

Many great writers are not proud of their earliest works. Sometimes it takes years to improve their skills and hone their craft. Most great writers are not born. Rather, they develop with years of hard work. Learn to have awesome writing and be the writer that you dream you can be.

Write every day. Like any skill, writing takes practice. Keep a journal. Describe a random encounter with a stranger at the grocery store. Write a story about a picture in a magazine. Daily writing exercises help make awesome writing.

Join a writer's group. Every great writer needs feedback. Share your writing with other writers so they can help make your writing awesome. These groups typically give assignments that keep you committed to writing.

Expand your vocabulary. Reread your writing and get rid of ordinary words like "nice," "good" and "pretty." Replace commonly used descriptive words with more powerful words. Write with an active voice to make the writing more engaging. Use a dictionary or thesaurus to help you find better word choices.

Study awesome writing. If you want to be a great writer, read great writing. Observe the way great writers tell a story. Employ some of the literary elements that great writers use.

Let your writing get cold. Put your writing away for a little while. Give the writing at least a few days before revisiting it. Go back to the writing with fresh eyes and make improvements to it.

Read your writing out loud. Sometimes when you hear what you wrote out loud, it makes editing easier.

Be concise. When you edit, it is better to cut parts of the writing, rather than add to it.
