Automatic writing is the process of allowing spiritual entities to guide a person's hand, while she is holding a writing instrument. Spiritualists believe that people can make contact with nonphysical beings who bring them information or answers to their questions. Skeptics, on the other hand, think that the results of automatic writing are created from subconscious urges. When attempting automatic writing, it may be helpful to consult the advice of a spiritual medium or trusted religious leader for guidance.

Find a quiet, solitary space where you will not be disturbed. Turn off distractions, such as cell phones, televisions or music.

Arrange a working space for your pen and paper. You should have several sheets of paper and a large enough space to allow your hand to move freely.

Close your eyes and breathe deeply, meditating on your question or asking for the guidance of your higher self or spirit guides. Some find it comforting to ask for spiritual protection or to visualize light surrounding them. Say a prayer or read a poem, if you feel it will help you to become focused. Do what feels right for you.

Hold the pen or pencil lightly in your hand, as you would if you were writing. Your grip should not be too tight but also not loose enough to allow the pen or pencil to fall out of your hand.

Ask your question or simply ask for someone to communicate with you.

Allow your hand to be guided by the spiritual energy, and do not force it to move any which way. Some may receive only images or symbols, whereas others may receive direct words or messages.

Stop when you feel comfortable and give thanks to the spirits you think you have communicated with. Some find it helpful to say a closing prayer or recite a meaningful phrase.

Save the paper with your messages and review them at different times in your life. Messages or symbols that do not make sense now might hold more meaning later on.
