Publishing Resume Tips
By:Daniel Westlake

Writing a proper resume for a job in the publishing industry is important. It is the first clue of your abilities within the publishing world to your prospective employers. This comes down to the format and the content of the resume, and whether the content catches someone's eye, the sign of any good publisher.

Error-Free
Because publishing is a profession that is about producing materials people can read without distraction, your resume is the first example of your ability to publish with clarity and precision. A resume demonstrates your control of words on a document you care about. This means every word must be perfectly spelled and every sentence must be perfectly punctuated and grammatically correct. Polish your resume until there is nothing in the text that can be misconstrued by a prospective employer.

Education Listing
List your education to show your prospective employer that you have been trained in the world of writing, literature and publishing. If you did not get a degree in publishing, not listing your education specifics may be a better option for your resume. Avoid being too specific with what you learned during your publishing education. Employers don't necessarily care what you learned in the classroom beyond the basics. What you've learned in the working world is more important to them.

Technical Jargon
Use technical jargon on your resume to prove to employers that you know what you are talking about and that you have experience speaking the publishing lingo. That said, do not overdo it because it may seem like you are trying to show off to your employers and not being honest about who you are. A few technical words dropped in here and there are best.

One Page
As people in the publishing world are constantly looking at a wide variety of resumes and pages in general, keep your resume short and sweet and limited to one page. This will be appreciated by your prospective employer, and it shows that everything they need to know about you can simply fit on one page.
