How Will a Teacher Motivate a Pupil to Value Education?
By:Mary MacIntosh

A teacher's job encompasses far more than simply disseminating content to passive listeners. In fact, an essential task for all good instructors is motivating pupils to value their education and pursue knowledge on their own. By stimulating curiosity and transferring useful problem-solving skills, a successful teacher can turn a reluctant pupil into a life-long learner. To help students in your class and beyond, create a positive, interactive environment in which students feel interested and valued.

Make a Personal Connection
Every student has different academic needs, talents and future goals. Individualized attention from a teacher can help a student connect scholastic ability with his interests and objectives. Pupils will be more motivated to participate in lessons that are tailored to highlight their unique talents.

Starting on the first day, make a concerted effort to memorize names and gauge each individual's strengths and weaknesses. Supplement this information with observations throughout the year of each pupil's learning style and interests. You may then design the curriculum with the students' skills and preferences in mind.

Foster a Cooperative Atmosphere
A competitive environment will prevent students from taking risks and stifle their interest in the material. Encourage cooperation through group projects that allow each individual to utilize their particular talents. Student-directed learning allows pupils to steer the curriculum by designing their own projects and selecting the concepts that are most interesting.

Focus on Intrinsic Motivation
Extrinsic motivation, in the form of prizes, praise and other rewards, may encourage students to achieve specific academic goals. However, by distracting the focus from the content itself and the value of learning, extrinsic motivators decrease long-term motivation.

When a student is intrinsically motivated, his natural curiosity and interest drive him to learn. He is rewarded for his efforts by the satisfaction and joy he derives from education itself. Choose interesting topics, encourage hands-on learning methods and allow pupils autonomy to develop their intrinsic motivation.

Express Passion to Ignite Passion
Many teachers grow bored with the material they teach year after year. This ennui passes quickly from teacher to students, who will respond with a similar lack of enthusiasm. On the other hand, if a teacher is animated and excited, students are more likely to enjoy lessons and explore the topic on their own. Insert fresh ideas into your curriculum often, pursuing your own passions and interests.
