Bullying - Why it Happens
By:Nabihah Zaid

Bullying: What is it?

Bullying is when someone or a group of people treat someone else in an overbearing or an intimidating manner. Whether it's you the one bullying or you the victim of bullies, bullying has got to stop. No one likes being hurt and certainly no one likes being left out.

Why does it happen?

Fear of being bullied. Seems ironic but that is the fact. Some people think - to not get hit, you hit first. They think they need to act tough so that other bullies (if any) would be afraid of them and leave them alone. Technically, they are taking the easy way out of getting bullied. What they don't realize is, if they carry on bullying people, they will be the kind of people not cared for and will always be avoided.

Show of manhood. Another reason why boys bully is because they try to impress girls by showing how 'tough' they are. My advise to those kind of boys, girls won't look at how you bully people to know how tough you are. It's too easy to punch someone in the face and make fun of them after. But, it never is easy to control your anger and stay cool when problems arise.

If you want to impress girls, impress them by controlling your cool no matter what happens and then they might be interested in you. Most girls don't like seeing you acting 'macho', because honestly speaking, you'll look like a fool. In the case of girls bullying, I would say they just want attention and maybe they think it's a way of showing other girls that they are a queen, or it could be that they're trying to 'fit in' and be popular in school.

Histories of abuse. Whether it's from school or home, some people bully others as a way of letting their anger and frustrations out. For example, if you were being abused at home by your father because he's always coming home drunk, you would be scared of him and at the same time feeling angry at yourself for being 'weak' and defenseless against your father - which is how you turn into a bully.

Usually, bullies bully people who are smaller and weaker than themselves as it gives them a sense of pride when they 'win' the fight, which is normally why they keep on going after the same people, as they want to show that they can always win - regardless of how small the victim is. Bullies do this to tell themselves that they are tough - it's just that they don't have the nerve to pick on bugger and stronger people.

When you're through with bullying people, those victim of yours would soon let their frustrations out on other people, such as their younger siblings - the ones who won't hurt them as much as you have, and the cycle just carries on.This goes to show that no matter who you are, bullying hurts and it may leave a scar in ones life, which is why it's best if we say 'no' to bullying.
