6 Foolproof Ways to Prepare For a Big Exam
By:Vanessa Ann Lea

I am on my early twenties and I can say that I have been a student for most of my life. Like any student, I dread every exam and I rack my brains out to study for each of them. I was the kind of student who does not mind getting mediocre grades but if there is one thing I dread more than taking exams, it is failing at exams. Somehow I grew up with great fear of receiving failing grades. I have tried failing at minor quizzes and tests before and it always made me feel so embarrassed and worthless. I would try to make up for my grade by getting a higher score in the finals and ultimately steering clear of a disgraceful final grade. Over the years of being a full time student, I have found ways to effectively prepare your self for a big exam. Here's how:

Start reading and scan your notes thoroughly a week or at least four days before the big day. Do this every night. This repetitive act can make you retain more information about your lesson. This also gives you more than enough time to prepare and avoid cramming.
Study in a quiet space and at a comfortable time. Avoid distractions such as the view of passing cars and people. Close the blinds and curtains, turn off your television and I-pod. Sit on a comfortable chair and keep your desk clutter-free. You need to be able to concentrate.
Neatly jot down in paper or index card some notes or formulas that you might want to memorize verbatim. They come in handy when you review your lessons in your head (whether you are walking in the campus, taking a shower, eating your lunch, or waiting in line) and you need a quick glance to affirm the validity of your information.
Take periodic rests and light snacks while studying. Boredom and fatigue can always kick in anytime so gather more energy and allow yourself a little entertainment. I would always take a break in the middle of my study session to watch at my favorite tv show or to grab some crackers and cheese. After resting, put aside the distractions and focus on studying.
Hydrate yourself. Have a pitcher of water near your table while studying. If you find yourself feeling sleepy, drink a glass of water. Dehydration can make you feel drowsy. If you need something stronger to ward off sleep, consume caffeinated products such as coffee and cola. These can send you peeing from time to time but the trips to the bathroom also give you a chance to stretch out those legs.
Finally, when you are done studying and reviewing yourself of the concepts and formulas, divert your mind from the pressure of the upcoming test and just try to be positive about things. Knowing that you have done your best to prepare for the exam gives you confidence and more nerves to take on the challenge. Stay calm and keep your focus. You will surely ace that big exam.
