Classroom Management - Leave Theory Aside, and Get Down to What Works
By:Tania Mesar

What do jails and classrooms have in common? If teachers want a positive classroom environment where each member does their share to contribute to effective management, the answer should be 'nothing'. To have effective classroom management, teachers must incorporate current and engaging lesson plans in conjunction with motivational techniques and positive reinforcement to ensure that students are instilled with a feeling of self-worth, self-respect, and self-discipline.

Effective classroom management occurs in a nurturing classroom where lesson plans are created to address the needs of all learners. If teachers are genuine, and take time to know themselves and their students, a little flexibility in pedagogical technique along with creativity and respect can go a long way into managing the classroom in a way that is desirable for both teacher and student.

A teacher must be aware of his/her strengths and weaknesses. The teacher must play upon their own strengths to create a classroom environment that models good values and attainable goals. Despite classroom management strategies, should behavioral problems surface, teachers must never act on impulse. It is best to have a pre-determined solution for main issues that can arise which are created out of fairness for both the teacher and the students.

Students must be made aware that they share responsibilities with their teacher to commit to the guidelines of their classroom management plan. When a student does not follow these guidelines, the learning community must decide whether the guidelines are affective and how they can be modified so that participants have a clear understanding. Effective classroom management has a slim chance of becoming a reality unless classroom guidelines make perfect sense to both the teacher and the students.

All theory aside, in my first year of teaching, I had a class that was quite difficult. I had two other classes which I taught the same lessons, and had the same classroom management plan set in place; however the two classes were great, and this one class seemed to me to be a living hell. What went wrong? In my opinion, that year I focused all my attention on creating the positive learning environment, and I was not as strong at making the consequences for student actions that I did not support clear to my classes. Also, in hindsight, I would have had more effective classroom management that year had I called home more often to ensure that the reinforcement for good behavior was being enforced both in the classroom and at home.

When teachers do not have full control of they may lose a lot of their energy and passion for teaching. We as teachers have such great communication skills that we need to be using in our classrooms to make sure that our students have a clear understanding of what we want them to do and what is unacceptable. When we have our classroom management plan put in place, it becomes a lot easier to go to work each day and teach because you love it, and not because you have to

Do not forget to check out the link in the resource box below. I've got a great free report that details my experiences so you can learn from them.
