How to teach English to an adult student
By:tips

If you think about it, 'how do little children learn English.'
Answer: For some it may take a year or more before they speak and usually they say one or two words to begin with. They listen and observe and then one day, the words tumble out especially where food is concerned.

Parents then encourage them by saying a short sentence using the words the child has spoken. If there are older siblings, then they often will say the sentence the way it should be spoken and the child learns. Parents and siblings often correct the way the child speaks a sentence - grammar doesn't get a mention.

Most children learn at their own pace and when you consider that fact, so will adults who do not have the language skills to begin with.

Forget the grammar and simply focus on the correct way to speak a sentence. I wouldn't even mention grammar and I taught TEFL over many years.

Use children's books, cereal packets and build a series of questions around say a Kellogg's Cereal package.

Example: Would you like some Kellogg's Cornflakes for breakfast? Write the sentence and finger each word while the adult looks at the package. Use other packet products and remember what it is that someone new to a language needs to learn - the basic stuff.

Children's Books is the way to go.

Keep it simple and reflect on how kids learn a language.
