Anji Shangshu Private High School (ASPHS), founded in 1984, was the first private high school in the new China since 1949.

In the past 21 years since establishment, ASPHS has enjoyed a remarkable reputation and has successively won honors like one of “the key experimental schools of the Ministry of Education”, “the excellent non-government schools of Zhejiang Province”, “the first class vocational schools of Zhejiang Province” and “the exchange base for foreign students in Zhejiang Province”. There are now more than 4000 teachers and students working and studying at ASPHS, including 400 teachers and administrative staff together with 12 foreign teachers. Apart from the strong faculty in regular high school teaching, ASPHS has made acknowledged achievements in the field of foreign language teaching. ASPHS is not only an innovative private school with a long history, but also one of the most modern and international schools in China.

Campus Facilities
ASPHS is located in the peaceful rural atmosphere of the Anji Economic Development Zone, near Hangzhou. The campus covers an area of 25.87 hectares with spectacular buildings and picturesque landscaping. All our classrooms are equipped with 29-inch color TV sets and cable TV. There are 600 computers (with broadband internet access), 600 audio booths, advanced multimedia classrooms, laboratories, lecture theatres, piano rooms, a sports field with a standard 400 meter athletics track, plus courts for basketball and volleyball as well as two modern canteen buildings. All our student apartments are equipped with toilet, shower, and balcony as well as direct-dial telephones. There are also two supermarkets, a laundry and an ATM on the campus.

Faculty
There are currently more than 400 teaching and administrative staff at ASPHS, including numerous senior teachers. Since our school made a policy decision in 2000, to recruit excellent teachers from outside, we have employed a large number of subject leaders and senior teachers, with an average age of about 38 years. In the prime of their life, they are experienced and in the golden period of their teaching career, full of achievements. In addition, our school also engages 12 foreign teachers every year from countries such as the U.S.A., New Zealand, Philippines and Japan. So we are very well endowed in foreign language teaching.

Foreign Teachers
Since we introduced the first foreign teacher in 1997, more than 50 foreign teachers from different countries have worked at ASPHS. The school has the most foreign teachers among high schools in Zhejiang Province. At the moment, there are 12 foreign teachers at ASPHS. By virtue of their conscientious and hard-working attitude and active involvement, they have made an enormous contribution to the foreign language teaching of our school and at the same time played an important role in the exchange of Chinese and foreign culture. Two of them have won the “Westlake Friendship Prize” (the highest award for foreign experts to receive in Zhejiang Province) awarded by the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province, and six of them have won the “Southern Taihu Lake Friendship Prize” awarded by the People’s Government of Huzhou City.

They have not only brought with them authentic foreign languages, but more importantly they have brought the cultures from their various countries as well. Such exposure to many cultures is a unique experience for every student of ASPHS. In the short term this kind of experience seems novel, but in the long run it will have a positive and profound impact on a person’s growth for their whole life.

College
Besides, ASPHS has invested a college named Zhejiang Yuxiang Foreign Languages College (ZYFLC) nearby, opened in year 2002. ZYFLC also welcomes foreign teachers!
