ESL Teaching and Learning Tips
Hey Karla and somebody else who might ready this message.
Im a Brazilian teacher, not graduated from ESL but I've been teaching English for almost 10 years.
You don't need to be stick to a book, you can take the best things they offer you and take to your class.
Of simply take resources on the web. What Im trying to tell you is that the only resource you need is your own mind. Be creative but remember to bring things that really make sense to your students.
Don't stick to grammar teaching, but teach it through communication...so make your students learn grammar by using it.
You can use this when preparing a topic for your students.
S - see (it's the 1st step, you introduce the topic or what you want them to learn. For example.u can write the following on the board.
I like pizza. (Have your students to repeat it, and provide them vocabulary). Then you say Do you like pizza St A? Do you like...? (provide a variety of vocabulary)
L- Listen (students listen to the language) when you say I like vegetables/ I like chocolate. They see this on the board, and listen to you saying it.
S- Speaking (make your students speak that, through repetition, or an activity for example: give them a paragraph about someone saying what s/he likes, they pretend they are this person.
E- execute (now it's time to practice everything they've seen during the class). Using their own information. A Survey can be a very nice activity to practise it.
I think if you plan your class following these steps above, your classes are gonna be guided, your students will feel much more confident to speak...and they'll learn better.
Hope to have helped you.
