Some parts of speech, such as nouns (peoples, places or things) and verbs (actions), form the foundations of the most basic sentences you can write. To make your sentences more interesting, you can add modifiers like adjectives, which describe certain nouns and make them appear more vivid to the reader. You can further modify verbs, adverbs and adjectives using adverbs, which specify the extent or manner of the action or description. Writing a sentence with two of more adjectives and adverbs is not only easy, but a fun, creative word exercise as well.

1

Write a simple sentence with a subject and object (nouns) as well as a verb, keeping in mind that adjectives modify nouns and adverbs modify verb, adjectives and adverbs. A sample sentence might be "A cyclist drinks water after he finishes the race." Another is "The cyclist is fast." The first sentence has three nouns and two verbs. The second has one noun, one verb and a predicate adjective.

2

Add adjectives to modify your sentence's nouns. For the first sentence in Step 1, you might add three adjectives and write "A tired cyclist drinks cold water after he finishes a long race." For the second, you might add three adjectives and write "The tall, lean Ethiopian cyclist is fast."

3

Modify your sentence's adjectives, verbs or adverbs with adverbs, which usually end in "ly." You might modify the first sentence from Step 2 by adding three adverbs and writing "A tired cyclist drinks cold water very slowly after he finishes an extremely long race." The adverb "slowly" modifies the verb "drinks"; "very" modifies the adverb "slowly"; the adverb "extremely" modifies the adjective "long." To modify the second sentence from Step 2, you might add three adverbs and write "The surprisingly tall, skeletally lean Ethiopian cyclist is extraordinarily fast." In this sentence, the adverbs all modify adjectives. Think about the sentences. Do the adjectives and adverbs make them more vivid and descriptive, or less so?
