Transports In Lisbon, Portugal
By:Andrea V

Just like Rome in Italy even the capital of Portugal, Lisbon, is built around 7 hills. This fact makes difficult for everyone to move around it, especially by car as it is very challenging to find a free parking space. Lots of Lisbon holiday apartments for tourists do not have this facility and so if you come by car you may have to park quite far.

In Lisbon you can use different means of transport that combine old and new. The famous tram scaling the streets of Alfama is definitely ancient and the Santa Justa elevator dates back even to 1892. But the metro is modern, no need to worry.

FUNICULARS
Even if they seem similar to the bus lines, the funicular are only destined to the steepest Lisbon streets and there are three lines in the city. The Lavra Funicular, dating back to 1884 and originally powered by water, the Glória Funicular and the Bica funicular. Today the powering of the funicular is exclusive by electricity. The prices are 1.40€ for a single service, 1.65€ for a combined ticket.

METRO
The Lisbon metro is really something to be seen. From the beginning of the projects (1950), the architect Keil do Amaral wanted to make the public transport line as amenable as possible. He decided to place some art works, in particular of the artist Maria Keil (works in 19 stations). Don’t miss the Red line, definitely the most impressive with the great tile paintings. A single metro fare costs 0.80€/one zone, 1.10€/two zones

TRAMS
The yellow one is maybe the symbol of the city and no trip is finished without a journey up to the hills. Lisbon tram is something that is fully part of the image of the city. The famous yellow one is the tram number 28, running through the areas of Alfama and Chiado. Take it and running for the whole line is an idea to “visitâ€
