Lisbon, Portugal - History and Hedonism in One
By:Elmo Populous

It is hard to do justice to Lisbon in just a few short days. It is a fascinating capital renowned for its friendly, lively atmosphere. Its famous nightlife certainly provides testament to that. Yet despite the coverage given to its stylish bars and clubs, Lisbon contains many historical and cultural gems that are worth investigating. Even if you are strapped for time, any break in this wonderful city is sure to be rewarding.

Lisbon has an array of historical sites to explore. The Monastery of Jeronimos is one of the few buildings from Portugal's most glorious era to survive the Great Earthquake of 1755. It is the most impressive example of Manueline architecture, and one of the most inventive and awe-inspiring pieces of architecture in the whole of Portugal. A further mesmerising sight is the Castelo de Sao Jorge which lies on the ruins of the Moorish palace. The Tower of Ulysses' camera obscura on the site offers astounding 360 degree views of the city.

Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to Lisbon's eating establishments. Cheap lunches can be obtained at the Pois Café, including a daily vegetarian option. The Antiga Confeitaria de Belém is deservedly famous for its delicious custard tarts and is a great place to watch the world go by. For a full evening meal, Resto serves tapas and barbecued meat in its lively courtyard whilst more expensive international cuisine is on offer in the upstairs restaurant. Both offer gorgeous views of the river.

Lisbon has an exhilarating atmosphere at night, when multitudes of revellers come out to play. Warm up in A Tasca, a cheerful and friendly tequilar bar in the Bairro Alto. You could follow this by trying your luck at Lux, Lisbon's premier and in demand night club which has played host to the set of many a famous DJ. If the queue proves too long, make your way to Kapital, a stylish club popular with a young local crowd.

Finding a place to rest your head in the capital is straightforward; just remember to book in advance in the summer months. Those wanting to meet fellow travellers and seeking a lively base should go to the Oasis Backpackers' Mansion with its friendly atmosphere and well-equipped facilities. For a quieter environment, consider one of the comfortable rooms of the Pensao Globo. Before leaving for this incredible destination, organise some travel insurance for peace of mind. Make sure you get a great deal for your money by comparing insurers. Lisbon airport is well-linked to the rest of Europe by the budget airlines, with increased services in the summer months
