Travel Smart to the Middle_East
By:Lydia Evdoxiadi Verniory

Tourism in the Middle East is developing rapidly. Its deeply routed successive civilisations have left their imprint making this area of the world one of the major tourist destinations. The Middle East remains an economical destination with incredible activity diversity.

Travel smart and hassle-free by following all of these basic 7 steps:

1. Make sure your travel documents and visas are in order prior to arrival. Especially, make sure your passport has at least 6 months grace period until expiration. This is your safety net.

2. Get adequate insurance for flight flexibility. As distances in arid areas are considerable, you might be stuck or even better, you just might want to see Petra in Jordan for an entire day! Some of the best destinations require an extra day and can cost you an extra day to reach the airport.

3. Stock on medication against diarrhoea and vomiting. These are the two most common tourist symptom and having that handy will save you an entire day, expenses, and the distress of communicating outside your cultural and personal boundaries on embarrassing issues!

4. Respect the dress code. This will earn you the respect of local populations which are often more than glad to help and provide assistance. Triple your chances to get help by respecting this basic rule.

5. Stock on up-to-date maps, especially if you are driving. Maps for long-distance driving must usually be ordered beforehand via the internet. Do not let yourself take the risk of being stranded, no matter how friendly local people are. They tend to travel less than westerners, even within their own territories.

6. When choosing a place to eat, just look at restaurant facilities where an abundance of locals eat and drink. This is a proven way to get a sufficient meal for a fair price. Look at what others are paying and do not hesitate to point out politely a possible price difference.

7. Last but not least, ask permission for photos including locals, vehicles, and identifiable landmarks. I would strongly advise against publishing photos of individuals and especially border patrol on the internet, unless you have permission. To many, this can be offensive.

Get that 'aha' experience by treating yourself and locals well. You will be amazed at how quickly you can build a network of friends to last for decades! Enjoy and let enjoy!
