Austria: Planning a Visit

If you've never visited Austria but are interested in living there for a short or even extended period of time, it can be helpful to first plan a visit. It's always helpful to visit an area before you make the decision to live there, no matter how sure you are of your decision. Although you can certainly plan a trip to Austria during any time of the year, here are a few useful tips that can help you get the most out of your trip. Of course, as with any area, it could be good idea to visit Austria during several different times of the year, so that you get a good feel for the climate variations.

Choosing a Season for Your Visit

The time of year that you choose for your visit will determine the kinds of activities you'll be able to participate in. For example, if you visit in the summer, you'll be able to enjoy biking, swimming, hiking and other kinds of outdoor activities. However, since Austria is known for its fantastic skiing facilities, you might prefer to visit during the winter season.

Winter Visits

Fewer crowds and less traffic in the cities are two advantages of visiting during the winter. Plus, you'll have a better chance of getting a low hotel rate. Of course, you can expect bigger crowds in the areas around the ski resorts, and the Christmas and Easter timeframes are always busier. As would be expected, the weather does get quite cold in Austria during the winter season, so make sure to bring your warm winter clothes. Since the Alpine resorts are often closed for the season during November and early December, you should avoid that time frame if you're interested in the resorts.

Summer Visits

If you're thinking of visiting Austria during the warmer months, the time frame from April to October is usually the best choice. However, it's important to be aware that prices are always higher during July and August, and there are larger crowds. Plus, if you're interested getting a chance to visit the opera or listen to the Vienna Boy's Choir, they are closed during the hot summer months. This fact can make June or September more attractive choices if you want to take in the city sites or avoid the hot weather. If you're interested in staying at an Alpine resort, be aware that they are often closed between late April and mid-June. If you're interested in partaking in one of the music festivals, plan on visiting during the May to October timeframe.

The summer season from June to August is short, and the winter season can be quite long and cold. Austria also gets quite a bit of snow during the winter. Although weather conditions can be a bit changeable and unpredictable during the spring and autumn seasons, the temperatures are usually comfortable. When visiting Austria during the spring and autumn seasons, it's best to bring a variety of clothing options, so that you're prepared for fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions. However, regardless of when you visit, you're sure to enjoy everything that Austria has to offer.
